Passage-based Essay

In Literature, we've been working with the story "A pudding like a night in the sea" from the book Snapshots. After we read it, we had to work in pairs choosing one of three writing tasks. My mate and I chose the passage-based essay. Our teacher gave us a part of the story to work with.

In our opinion the author makes this such a powerful moment by describing certain details like "His voice went through every crack and corner of the house" and in this way we know how the characters feel in that moment. The fact that the author describes this details about the volume of the voice and exagerates how it reverberated, helps us to imagine exactly what happened. The description of attitudes, feelings, behaviours are very important so that we can, in a way, "enter" or be part of those important moments of a story.

The author also uses similes and comparisons like "there was his face, and his eyes like black lightning" so that we can know or imagine the situation and how much, in this case angry, the character was. We can also know how nervous the kids were because of their attitudes towards their father when he enters the room. They were so nervous that they started lieing. For example "We went outside, and when we came back the pudding was gone!"

In conclusion, the author gives power to this part of the story by giving key details about attitudes, the tone of the voice and some feelings Huey and Julian showed towards their strict dad.
